You don’t need to turn up with a plan. Most people arrive with a colour they like and a vague feeling, and we get there from that. Some send me a photograph of something that isn’t even a hat.

FIVE DECISIONS

The shape — fedora, telescope, open crown or cowboy.

The brim — 2.5 inches, 3.5 (the Felix Culpa), or wider. Flat, half-curled or curled.

The felt — 160g rabbit. Black, bone, grey, brown, cardinal, sky blue or canary.

The band — grosgrain, leather, denim, dried flowers or feathers.

How much damage — one to five, from barely touched to survived something.

HOW IT WORKS

1 — You message me. Instagram or email. A rough idea, or no idea at all.

2 — We talk it through. Ten minutes. I’ll size you over video if you want, before any money changes hands.

3 — Half up front to hold the slot.

4 — About a week on the block. I’ll send photos as it goes.

5 — Balance, then it ships. Tracked and insured, anywhere.

WHAT IT COSTS

AUD $600. Wide brims, coloured felts, leather and trim work, and heavy burn work move it up from there. You’ll have a real number before anything is cut.

HOW MANY I CAN TAKE

Eight to twelve hats a month, and that includes the ones already on the shelf. If the month is full I’ll tell you straight away rather than keep you waiting.

WHAT IF IT DOESN’T FIT

I’ll size you over video before you pay anything. Most heads are 57 to 61cm.

WHAT IF I DON’T LIKE IT

You’ll see photos as it goes. All sales are final, and that’s exactly why I’d rather over-talk it before I cut anything.
